Renaissance ROM Re-Development Project, Toronto, Canada

In 2001, Toronto's ROM, a major world museum, instigated a major redevelopment for the 21st century, comprising insertion of a new wing (by architect Daniel Libeskind) and refurbishment of the existing galleries.

Haley Sharpe have planned and designed all the exhibit galleries, to be delivered in three phases, on four floors in both the new and ‘heritage' buildings.

Planning with curatorial staff, the sheer number of artefacts and the intense architectural settings demanded aesthetic clarity and an object-led approach. Instead of illustrating curatorial narratives with a few artefacts, a large number of artefacts was selected and every one is allowed to ‘tell' its own story.

Our designs clarify the meanings of artefacts, using colours, textures, planes and surfaces, lighting, and display case layouts, from single iconic items through groupings to the identities of complete galleries.

"wondrous ... organized to appeal to our sense of curiosity and our desire for comfort..."
