To mark in 2007 the 400th anniversary of the first permanent English settlement in North America, we worked extremely closely with our client partners, architects and planners to create and implement a master plan for this internationally significant archaeological site.

New research and previously unseen artefact collections broadened the traditional narrative of English colonisation to include the intersection of American Indian, European and African cultures and people.

Exhibits in a new archaeological museum provide context for the twin stories of the earliest development of the colony, and the investigative process that is revealing it afresh. Exhibits in a new visitor centre provide a narrative overview of the whole site through its entire history.

To connect visitors to the hidden histories of the landscape, innovative ‘virtual viewers' using CGI techniques peel away the live modern views to reveal reconstructed historic scenes.

"[This experience] provides a richer, fairer, more intimate understanding of the beginnings of our nation."

Bly Straube, APVA senior curator
