This vastly expanded museum of Canada's military heritage set out to avoid traditional military museum display techniques in preference for more emotive messaging. We worked closely with the Museum's team to evolve the storyline and display strategies.

Personal stories are woven into the chronological flow, and the pacing and impact of exhibit images, artefacts and spaces creates a rhythm of peace and war, drama and pathos. A flowing, intuitive communication hierarchy avoids overwhelming visitors with the intensity of the information.

Our work paralleled the evolving architectural concepts, creating a dynamic synergy between the exhibits and interior spaces. Exhibit structures are angular and trapezoidal, to echo the architecture, and the spartan palette of exhibit materials includes galvanized steel, concrete, and wood. The effect is to make the exhibits ‘float' between the ceilings and bare concrete floors.

"If you seek the heart of our Nation; if you want to know who we are and how we came to be what we are - look inside this building"

Paul Martin, Canadian President 2003-2006, May 2005

"Is the CWM the world's best of its kind? Very possibly."

Cameron Campbell, Vice President, The Atlantic Council of Canada, 2005
