Sudbury Museum of Childhood, Sudbury Hall, Derbyshire, UK
After contributing to a successful HLF Stage 2 bid, we designed, tested and installed interactive children’s galleries based on the museum’s important artefact collections. Integrating exhibit structures into the 19th-century wing of Grade I listed Sudbury Hall was a key challenge. We planned the sequence of experiences to evoke childhood memories, using pacing, light and sound, vistas and manipulation of architectural volumes to create spaces seen through a ‘child’s eye’. Providing consultancy to support the client’s interpretive team, we delivered their specific vision of ‘learning for all’ in a variety of ways, including the creation of practical work/play spaces, opportunities and materials for storytelling, and interactive components aimed at role-play and experimentation. “ the play, creativity and challenging experiences of our childhoods can help us understand ourselves, make connections with others and relate to the world around us”
